Bells Elementary School fifth-graders Elana Schwartz and Ja’Mesani Stanley taught their classmates about Hanukkah and Ramadan.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP - Bells Elementary School students in Mrs. Dominique Cardullo’s fifth-grade class were eager to share about their holidays and traditions, creating a meaningful opportunity for learning and connection. Recognizing this enthusiasm, Mrs. Cardullo thoughtfully provided Elana Schwartz and Ja’Mesani Stanley the flexibility to share about Hanukkah and Ramadan with their classmates.

Both students took ownership of their learning by creating presentations that explained the significance of the holidays, key traditions, and why they are important to their families. They went a step further by designing games for their classmates to play afterward, making the experience engaging and inclusive for everyone. This opportunity not only honored students’ cultural identities, but also fostered curiosity, respect, and a deeper sense of community within the classroom.

“When students are given the opportunity to share their own traditions and teach their peers, it builds understanding, respect, and a true sense of belonging,” Bells Principal Dr. Shaun Giberson said. “Experiences like this reflect the inclusive, student-centered learning environment we strive to create at Bells.”
